Soul, blues, rock and hip hop come together at the hands of Gary Clark Jr. His sound is raw, visceral and with enough tonal range to tear a hole in your speakers if you’re not careful. His skills with a guitar rival that of slowhand, which when paired with his crooning make for a truly unique listening experience. The less spoken about it the better, as words don’t do the album enough justice. Been suggesting this album since I heard it in 2016 and I can’t praise it enough
Best heard on speakers or headphones with big-ish drivers. Tiny earbuds struggle to express the entire breadth of sound often clipping at both the lo’s and the hi’s.
My favourites
Cold Blooded/Wings - Soulful vocals that make troubles melt away. Two successive songs which pair beautifully with a quiet evening
Can’t Sleep - Fast Paced. Urgent. Feet tapping, blood pumping. Fits just as well on a workout playlist as it does in a party mix.
Shake - bluesy to the core, will have you shaking your head and itching to get up and dance
More from him
Things Are Changin’ (Solo Acoustic Version)
When My Train Pulls In
Travis County - reminds me of Status Quo’s Rockin All Over the World
Don’t Owe you A Thang (Studio Version)
